Dr. Porras has been a Professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business since 1972 in the field of Organizational Behavior.   He was the Associate Dean from 1991 to 1994, and directed the School’s Executive Program on Leading and Managing Change for 18 years. He has served on the board of directors of the State Farm Automobile Insurance Company, State Farm Life Insurance Company, State Farm General Insurance Company, Quaker Fabric, and ReloAction, and is currently an advisory board member of the Decurion Corporation and a member of the Knight Commission.

Working with Jim Collins, Dr. Porras co-authored the international bestseller Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies. The book is based on the results of an exhaustive six-year research project aimed at discovering the approaches and behaviors of the most visionary companies of the past two centuries.   In 2007, with Stewart Emery and Mark Thompson, Dr. Porras co-authored another best seller, Success Built to Last: Creating a Life that Matters. This book focuses on over 200 leaders who have made a significant impact on the world and identifies the key approaches they used to build such meaningful lives. A student of organizational change, Dr. Porras has helped numerous clients around the world improve their organizational performance. As a lecturer on visionary companies, Dr. Porras has delivered presentations to over 250 senior management audiences worldwide.

Dr. Porras is a member of the Knight Commission, the Stanford Athletics Board, and sits on the Advisory Board of the Positive Coaching Alliance.

Switching his focus to startup and smaller companies, Dr. Porras recently co-founded the Latino Business Action Network, a non-profit organization.

Dr. Porras has a PhD from University of California, Los Angeles, an MBA from Cornell University, and his BSEE from Texas Western College.
